Once again, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself embroiled in a mystery of elegant proportions! After waking up unusually early one morning, Phryne has some rare free time on her hands. She decides to pay a visit to a university professor she had met and admired during a previous case. Following a pleasant lunch, Phryne is invited to dine at the professor's home in Williamstown later that week.
During her dinner at Jeoffrey's house, Phryne makes two shocking discoveries: first, an abandoned opium pipe in the park, and later, the body of a Chinese man on the beach. The cause of death is not immediately clear, but is ultimately ruled a homicide. Shortly thereafter, Lin Chung's teenage sister-in-law goes missing from her home. Things take a more sinister turn when one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered at a Chinese-themed party he is hosting, leaving Phryne to wonder if these incidents are somehow connected. To add to the intrigue, mysterious notes are left in her letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH".
In addition to the resourceful and stylish Phryne, this captivating mystery also highlights Phryne's three wards, who have their own mysteries to solve. Ruth and Jane are tracking an embezzler at the Institute, while Tinker assists Phryne in uncovering the author of the threatening notes.
